The Development Journey
The journey to the creation of “AEW: Fight Forever” began with several members of AEW management expressing interest in an AEW video game ahead of AEW Dynamite’s debut episode in October 2019.
The game was officially announced on November 10, 2020, at the AEW Games 1.0 Special Event.
Yukes, which has previously worked on multiple games for both NJPW and WWE, was announced as the developer of AEW: Fight Forever.
This marks Yuke’s first wrestling game since WWE 2K19 in 2018. The development team was led by Hideyuki “Geta” Iwashita, the director of WWF No Mercy and WCW/nWo Revenge.

Influences and Key Features
One of the key influences for the game was WWF No Mercy due to its popularity with fans of the genre. The senior producer at Yuke’s, Hiromi Furuta, stated that Fight Forever was not intended to rival the WWE 2K series.
Instead, the game is a spiritual successor to games like WWF No Mercy and Virtual Pro Wrestling, with gameplay in the style and veins of the AKI engine that ran those games.
Furthermore, the game has partnered with the Owen Hart Foundation to preserve the legacy of the late wrestler Owen Hart, marking his first appearance in a video game since 2004 in Showdown: Legends of Wrestling.
