AEW has been sued over the mask design of Luchasaurus.
Composite Effects, LLC filed a legal complaint against All Elite Wrestling and Austin Matelson (Luchasaurus) in U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Louisiana on December 20.
Composite Effects claimed that Luchasaurus is allowed to use the mask they designed as a wrestler. However, he hasn’t been authorized to produce merchandise using the design which AEW has done:
‘Matelson was entitled to use the mask in events as a wrestler, but neither he nor anyone acting on his behalf was entitled to create merchandise that incorporated the mask design.’
AEW lawsuit
Austin Matelson worked with Composite Effects in 2016 to come up with a modified version of their Viper Silicone Mask. Another modified version was created in March 2019 that added horns to the mask.
The lawsuit includes examples of AEW using the mask design to produce merchandise such as T-Shirts and Action Figures. Composite Effects says that they sent messages to AEW and Matelson to stop using the mask design or come to a licensing agreement in 2022 but no deal was reached.
Luchasaurus joined AEW in 2019, making his debut during the Double or Nothing event in May. He has been with the company ever since.
AEW has not responded to the lawsuit yet.
