CM Punk, the once reigning AEW World Champion, is set to make his much-anticipated return on June 17th during the premiere episode of AEW Collision.

Punk had been noticeably absent from television following his victory over Jon Moxley at AEW All Out 2022.

However, his victory was marred by an injury – a torn triceps, and a string of disparaging remarks targeted towards Hangman Page, Kenny Omega, and The Young Bucks’‹.

What happened between CM Punk and AEW?

Despite having no on-screen relationship with The Elite, Punk’s feud with Hangman Page shook the foundation of AEW. This feud played a pivotal role in leading the company to its first million-dollar gate at AEW Double or Nothing 2022.

Punk accused Page of threatening this record-breaking achievement due to comments Page made in a promo ahead of the bout. Page retorted on television, “You talk a big game about workers’ rights. Well, you’ve shown the exact opposite since you got here. I love this place, I care about this place. This is my home. And this Sunday at Double or Nothing, I will not be defending this championship against you. No, for the first time in my life, I’ll be defending All Elite Wrestling from you.”’‹

The Accusations and Denials

Page justified his actions and comments by alleging that Punk had attempted to get AEW wrestler and coach Colt Cabana fired.

Punk, however, vehemently denied these claims, stating that he had never asked Tony Khan, the president of AEW, to remove Cabana from the organisation’‹.

The Poisoned Match

Punk described his match with Page as ‘garbage’ in a recent interview with ESPN, claiming he was more focused on protecting himself rather than delivering an outstanding performance:

“I’m keeping an eye out. He chopped me in the mouth one time, and I’m just like, ‘OK, did you do that on purpose?’ You chip my tooth, and I’m like, ‘All right, should I give him a receipt?’ It changes the dynamic. It poisoned everything for me, and it made it all really, really ugly, and that was what set all of this off,” Punk said’‹.

The Fallout

Punk was injured after AEW Double or Nothing 2022 but called out Page on television during his return. However, Page did not respond to Punk’s challenge.

During his AEW All Out media scrum, Punk criticized Page for his claim that he didn’t take advice from veterans, a statement Page later clarified in April 2023’‹.

Punk’s Reflection

Punk shared further thoughts on his AEW All Out comments during an interview. Unfortunately, the full comments weren’t disclosed, leaving fans and critics alike in anticipation of his return and the potential re-ignition of his feud with Page’‹.
