AEW has operated as a company with one united roster so far but this will change with CM Punk’s return.
The former AEW champion’s return has been a major topic of discussion among wrestling fans recently. Despite the recent hurdles, it appears only a matter of time before the Straight Edge Star is back on TV.
The problem with his return however remains his dispute with the Elite. The two opposing parties of the Brawl Out have not made amends till now. AEW appears to be counting on working around it instead of solving the issues.
AEW’s brand split – CM Punk
In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer provided the biggest update on Punk’s return yet. He confirmed the date that has been set for his comeback:
“As things stand right now, the return of C.M. Punk is scheduled for a 6/17 show at the United Center in Chicago, which being a Saturday night show, is likely the debut of the new weekly show.”
Since the issues between The Elite and CM Punk are far from over, the company plans to keep them separate. According to the report, it will lead to an effective brand split between the new show and Dynamite:
“One would think it being in Chicago means he’ll be a babyface, and from a business standpoint, they need a babyface top draw right now with MJF, the BCC and Jericho on the heel side and FTR as faces who would likely be linked with him on the Saturday show. The Elite and BCC will remain the top attractions on the Wednesday Dynamite show.”
