The Premise of “Heels”

“Heels” centred around the intense rivalry between two brothers, portrayed by Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig. The storyline delved deep into their struggle to take over their deceased father’s wrestling promotion.

The show made its debut in August 2021 and was swiftly renewed for a second season in November of the same year.

Fans were eagerly awaiting the next season, scheduled to air in July 2023. However, their hopes were dashed when, on September 25th, 2023, it was announced that “Heels” was among four series to be axed by Starz.

CM Punk and Star-Studded Appearances

Both CM Punk and AJ Lee graced the show with their presence in guest roles. Punk took on the character of Ricky Rabies, while Lee portrayed Elle Dorado.

Punk’s character, Ricky Rabies, was notably inspired by the late Tracy Smothers, a revelation made by Punk in an interview from August 2021.

Smothers had a rich history in wrestling, having competed in WWF and ECW during the late 1990s. He clinched the ECW World Tag Team Championship in 1997 and also had notable stints with Smokey Mountain Wrestling, World Championship Wrestling, and New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Critical Acclaim

Despite its cancellation, “Heels” was not short of accolades. The series boasts a commendable 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Both critics and audiences alike held the show in high esteem, praising both its seasons.

Stephen Amell, who played one of the lead roles, is no stranger to the limelight. Before “Heels”, he was the face of the “Arrow” television series, portraying Oliver Queen.

His association with wrestling is also noteworthy. Amell has made appearances in WWE, Ring of Honor, and AEW. He even teamed up with Neville (now known as PAC in AEW) in 2015 to defeat the duo of Stardust (Cody Rhodes) and King Barrett at SummerSlam.
