With the rise of the internet, wrestling has moved towards moments more than stories, especially on the independent circuits.
Young talents are often seen focusing on cool-looking moves in hopes of going viral. Fast-paced matches are now less about selling and more about keeping things exciting throughout. Jake Roberts for one, is not a fan of this new approach.
The wrestling legend expressed his displeasure with this shift on the latest episode of his podcast (H/t WrestlingNews.co). He mentioned that wrestlers nowadays do all the crazy moves but then get beaten by simple holds:
‘What kills me is they’ll go out and do all these horrible fu**ing crazy unbelievable spectacular moves and nobody gets beat by one of them, but they get beat by the most vicious hold in wrestling, the schoolboy. I hate that. God, damn I hate that, and shame on you guys for doing the school boy you lazy fu**s.”
Jake Roberts Wants You To Sell
Jake Roberts explained that if it was him, he would want to be beaten by the best move of his opponent. He also advised young talents to sell a little bit:
“I want to get beat by that guy’s best maneuver, not a schoolboy where it’s an accident and I’m such a pu**y that I can’t kick out. Give me a break guys. Get your head out of your ass. Have some respect for your fellow combatant and go out there and sell a little bit. That’s my only bitch with these young guys. They don’t sell shit.’
