New Japan Pro Wrestling confirmed back at Wrestle Kingdom that they would be heading to US television shortly. It was also confirmed by the company that a UK television deal was also in the works.
There was an update to the reports in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter this week. ‘Obviously the TV deal still hasn’t been finalized” Dave Meltzer wrote. “Although, the announcement could come at any time when it is. I’ll just say that it’s not something people would consider major.’
There have been rumours as to what the television deal may well be for fans in the United States. Several fans have alluded to the fact that the colour purple has been used significantly in the build up to the announcement.
Potential Television Parnters
Pluto TV, Roku, Twitch and HBO Max all feature purple as their primary brand colour; so there’s a chance that one of these may be the destination. In terms of the UK deal, NJPW commentator Chris Charlton also referenced purple; leading some fans to believe that BT Sport may have grabbed the rights to the UK broadcast.
The BT Sport deal however looks unlikely, as the television broadcaster already has WWE as their major pro wrestling partner. If NJPW were able to get a deal with the likes of BT or even Sky Sports, it would be a huge move to further their reach in the UK and Europe.
