WWE are reportedly looking to make the Cruiserweight Championship one of the marquee elements of the NXT programme going forward.
The Cruiserweight division has not had a major focus arguably since the days of the Cruiserweight Classic, or when Enzo Amore was booked as Champion during the 205 Live/Monday Night RAW crossovers to try and bring some buzz to the purple brand.
Former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion KUSHIDA is the current Champion, and WWE are looking to build the division around him with some much bigger names being brought into the fold.
Diamond Mine leader Roderick Strong is currently feuding with KUSHIDA, and WWE reportedly have big plans for the former Undisputed Era member towards the middle and end of 2021.
Cruiserweight division reborn
Fightful Select recently confirmed these reports, saying “we’ve been told Roderick Strong figures big into NXT’s 2021 plans, especially their efforts to add marquee value to the Cruiserweight Title.”
There’s currently no confirmation on when WWE are planning on putting the NXT Cruiserweight Championship on Strong, however it will likely be at the next NXT Takeover event.
There will be more names added to the CW division as the year rolls on, with some main roster Superstars also being considered for a move to the NXT brand.
Names such as Ricochet, Mansoor and Ali may be considered for a move to NXT and the newly revived Cruiserweight division, although at this point those names should be considered rumored rather than definitive choices for the 205 division.
