It has been revealed that Alexander Volkanovski and Brian Ortega will be the coaches for season 29 of The Ultimate Fighter.
Originally, it was rumoured that the coaches for the latest season would be Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal. These plans were seemingly scrapped when Masvidal was given the upcoming Welterweight Championship shot at UFC 261.
ESPN’s Brett Okamoto reported the news, saying that the latest season of The Ultimate Fighter would feature Bantamweights and Middleweights.
‘The Ultimate Fighter reality series will return on ESPN in 2021, and Alexander Volkanovski and Brian Ortega will serve as opposing coaches per Dana White,’ Okamoto reported on Instagram. ‘No official date on their title fight, which was postponed last month after Volkanovski tested positive for Covid-19, but it will take place at the conclusion of the season.’
The Ultimate Fighter: Ortega vs Volkanovski
The aforementioned title fight between Ortega and Volkanovski was meant to take place at UFC 260. Volkanovski had to be pulled from the contest due to being tested positive for COVID-19.
Brian Ortega took to Twitter to wish the Champion well in his recovery shortly after the news was revealed. ‘He’s (Volkanovski) done everything right’ Ortega said. “I know you would’ve taken the fight no matter what, even with COVID. That’s the type of human you are.”
“I respect that. I hope you get better, I hope you heal up fast” Ortega continued. “We’ll postpone it and we’ll just reschedule it for when we have to.’
There’s currently no official air date on when The Ultimate Fighter will return.
