One of the breakout stars of UFC’s 2020 was Khamzat Chimaev. The 26 year old Russian fighter was expected to make his first appearance in the octagon on March 13th. Chimaev was due to face #3-ranked Leon Edwards, but the bout had to be cancelled for the third time.

The reasoning for this cancellation was due to Khamzat Chimaev not having fully recovered from COVID-19. It was revealed shortly after the cancellation that the UFC were taking measures to provide Chimaev with medical treatment in the United States.

Khamzat Chimaev recently had fans asking if he had retired from mixed martial arts. The promising breakout star recently posted to Instagram, essentially saying that his fighting career was over. ‘Thank you all so much for supporting me in my journey in this sport. I think I’m done. It’s not the most important victory in this life.’

Dana White on Khamzat Chimaev

UFC President Dana White recently addressed the future of Khamzat Chimaev. ‘If that’s what the guy wants to do, that’s up to him,’ White said. ‘But what he really needs to do is go home, watch a movie, take a nap, relax, and recover. (But) it’s not the killer mentality. He’s a killer. It’s hard to control a guy like that.’

‘This guy’s a physical specimen” Dana White continued. “This guy is unbelievable. He’s probably never been sick like this before. The difference between him and all the other fighters (who’ve had COVID-19) is the other fighters did what they were supposed to do. They weren’t running full speed on the treadmill and taking grappling classes with guys who were healthy. You can’t do that.’
