Backstage news on Kevin Owens missing SmackDown

Last updated

This week’s episode of SmackDown saw the return of Roman Reigns to TV for the first time since Survivor Series PPV. The Tribal Chief was involved in multiple segments where he set up a tag team match between himself and Kevin Owens. Though curiously, Owens did not make an appearance on the show.

Fightful Select provided an update on why Owens missed the show. They also revealed the original plans for the main event segment had the former Universal Champion made it to the arena:

‘Kevin Owens was supposed to be featured on the double Smackdown tapings but couldn’t make it due to what WWE told us was a ’˜nightmare travel situation.’ As a result, Owens had to be written out of the shows and major production and writing changes were made.’

Since Kevin Owens wasn’t available for the episode, Roman Reigns informed Adam Pearce that he and Sami Zayn would be teaming up to face Owens and a partner of his choosing at the December 30 SmackDown.

The final segment of the episode then saw The Bloodline coming to the ring. The promo of Reigns was interrupted by John Cena. The 16-time world champion announced that he would be teaming up with KO to face The Tribal Chief and Sami at the final SmackDown of 2022.
