2022 was a wild year for William Regal. He was first released from WWE, ending his 2 decades long run with the company. He went to AEW and became one of the focus points, only for him to quit a few months later and wound up back in WWE. According to Regal himself, the original plans for his AEW run didn’t even transpire during his time there.
The wrestling veteran recently appeared on Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip. He mentioned how he doesn’t have the desire to be in the spotlight at his age. Regal claimed that it should be about talent, which didn’t end up being the case in AEW:
‘In the last months of AEW, it was getting far too much about me. It should have been about the talent I was with, not about me. I’m quite happy being in the background. All it is grief. I’ve had my run. I couldn’t have had a better last few months as far as TV and doing that, but I didn’t go there with that intention.”
William Regal on AEW run
While William Regal didn’t provide much detail about the original plans for his AEW run, he did claim that the intention was to do something different:
“The intention was to do something different, and it started off the way it did, but I didn’t expect it to end up being this thing that it was for the last seven months where I just became talent. I went there with a different plan because I was asked to go there to help out in a different capacity, and that never transpired. Okay, I’m done.’
