WWE: The Evolution of Ownership

WWE’s roots trace back to the 1950s with the Capitol Wrestling Corporation (CWC). Initially, there was some ambiguity regarding the founder of CWC. While some sources attribute its inception to Jess McMahon, others believe it was Vincent J. McMahon, the father of the more widely recognized Vince McMahon.

The CWC underwent several transformations, including a rebranding as the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) in 1963. By 1979, it adopted the name World Wrestling Federation (WWF). The name would stick until 2002, when a legal dispute with the World Wildlife Fund led to another rebranding, this time as World Wrestling Entertainment.

For decades, the McMahon family, particularly Vince McMahon, held a significant stake in the company. Vince’s aggressive expansion strategies in the 1980s fundamentally altered the landscape of professional wrestling. He aimed to make WWF the premier wrestling promotion globally, a vision he largely achieved.

The Modern Ownership Structure

Fast forward to 2023, and the ownership dynamics of WWE underwent a significant shift. Prior to September 2023, Vince McMahon was the company’s majority owner, holding a commanding 38.6% of the company’s stock and a whopping 81.1% of the voting power. However, events in 2023 would change the course of WWE’s ownership.

Amidst an employee misconduct scandal, Vince McMahon stepped down as chairman and CEO, although he later returned as executive chairman.

In April 2023, WWE entered into a merger agreement with Endeavor Group Holdings. This merger would see WWE and the mixed martial arts promotion, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), come under the umbrella of a new public company named TKO Group Holdings.

This new entity would be majority-owned by Endeavor, with Vince McMahon serving as its executive chairman and Nick Khan as president. The merger was finalised on September 12, 2023.
