In a recent revelation, WWE Hall of Famer Booker T has expressed his concerns about AEW’s approach to wrestling events.

According to him, AEW seems to be more engrossed in the matches themselves rather than the stories leading up to them.

AEW: Apparent Focus on Matches Over Buildup

Booker T voiced his opinions on his Hall of Fame podcast. He highlighted how AEW’s All Out event took place just a week after All In, and he was taken aback by the suddenness of it all.

To him, the rapid succession of events felt rushed, almost as if they were “put together at the last minute.”

He went on to say, “I didn’t know about it. Didn’t know about any of these matches. It’s like this show is like a hotshot. It’s, like, put together here at the last minute. But, you know, I mean, I think with AEW, they’re not thinking about the buildup. They’re just thinking about the matches.”

Is AEW’s Approach Sustainable?

Drawing a comparison with WCW, Booker T pointed out that while WCW was more wrestling-focused than story-driven, they still made efforts to create a buildup.

They aimed to take the fans on a journey, even if the storylines weren’t always top-notch. He expressed his doubts about AEW’s current strategy, stating, “It’s just one of those companies; I don’t think that’s a recipe for success.”

The Importance of Storytelling in Wrestling

Wrestling isn’t just about the physical bouts in the ring; it’s also about the stories that lead up to those matches. The buildup creates anticipation, excitement, and emotional investment from the fans.

When done right, it can elevate a match from being just another event to a memorable moment in wrestling history.

AEW, being a relatively new player in the wrestling world, has garnered a significant following. Their focus on delivering high-octane matches is commendable.

However, as Booker T suggests, there might be a need for them to balance this with compelling storylines that captivate their audience even outside the ring.
