The wrestling world is no stranger to surprises, and 2022 was no exception. With CM Punk and his unexpected exit from AEW and the subsequent rumours of his return to WWE, fans have been on the edge of their seats.

However, the buzz surrounding Punk’s potential WWE comeback isn’t as intense as it was for another AEW star back in 2022, according to reports.

In a move that left many fans and industry insiders stunned, AEW and its president, Tony Khan, announced on September 2nd 2023 that CM Punk’s contracts with the company had been terminated.

This decision followed an internal investigation into a backstage incident that took place at AEW All In at Wembley Stadium on August 27th.

CM Punk: Speculations and WWE’s Stance

Post Punk’s AEW exit, the wrestling community was rife with speculation about his potential return to WWE.

Nick Hausman of Haus of Wrestling revealed that none of the insiders he spoke to dismissed the possibility of Punk’s WWE return.

However, the internal excitement within WWE about Punk as a potential free agent isn’t as palpable as it was when Cody Rhodes was rumoured to be available at the start of 2022:

“I’ve done a lot of asking around about a possible WWE return since Punk’s termination, and I have yet to meet someone in WWE or with knowledge of the situation who has ruled it out. One WWE source I spoke with noted that the buzz internally about Punk as a potential free agent is not there like it was when Cody Rhodes was rumoured to be on the market at the beginning of 2022” Hausman reported.

Timing is Everything

While there might be some interest in Punk’s return, the timing is crucial. Currently, WWE’s product is performing exceptionally well, and there isn’t an immediate need for a high-profile signing.

Yet, the possibility of WWE and Punk collaborating again isn’t off the table, especially if it proves to be a good business move.

This sentiment is particularly relevant as the newly merged TKO company aims to make a positive impression on its stockholders.

What’s Next for CM Punk?

As of now, there’s no official confirmation regarding any non-compete clause that CM Punk might have to adhere to post his AEW exit.

However, Punk himself hinted at having some free time for the upcoming two months. This statement has further fuelled speculation about his next move in the wrestling world.
