CM Punk, a name synonymous with wrestling, took the world by storm when he made his return to All Elite Wrestling (AEW) after a seven-year hiatus from professional wrestling.

Many believed that a return to WWE during this period was a distant dream. However, the winds of change began to blow following an altercation at AEW’s All Out media event last year.

During his time away, especially after the All Out 2022 event and a subsequent torn tricep injury, whispers began to circulate.

Sources close to Punk hinted at his openness to the idea of leaving AEW for a WWE return, according to a new report from Fightful Select. By December 2022, these whispers grew louder, with Punk reportedly keen on making an appearance in the 2023 Royal Rumble.

CM Punk: The WrestleMania Dream Match

While the details remain shrouded in mystery, there’s a tantalising rumour that’s caught the attention of WWE fans worldwide.

Punk, it’s said, had a specific vision for his WWE return. He imagined making a grand re-entry at the Royal Rumble, only to be eliminated and then challenge the very person who ousted him to a match at WrestleMania.

And the name that’s been floating around for this pivotal role? None other than Kevin Owens:

“One of the rumoured ideas that Punk had – not confirmed with he or his camp – actually made its way back to some WWE talent. The idea was that Punk would return at the 2023 WWE Royal Rumble, and work a match at WWE WrestleMania against the person who would eventually eliminate him. Word within WWE was that Kevin Owens was the name thrown around. He’d go on to main event night one of WrestleMania” Fightful reported.

AEW’s Decision and Punk’s Future

Despite Punk’s aspirations, it remains unclear if AEW ever considered letting him go in 2022 or if WWE showed genuine interest in his return.

What we do know is that Punk’s association with AEW has come to an end, paving the way for potential new beginnings.

However, the current state of negotiations between Punk and WWE remains under wraps. There’s also the question of any non-compete clauses post his AEW exit, which could dictate when he might be available for a WWE stint.
