Backstage reason for emotional Cody Rhodes segment on RAW

RAW this week featured a very emotional segment between Cody Rhodes and Paul Heyman. The exchange between these two helped give a new meaning to the upcoming match between Roman Reigns and the American Nightmare. According to latest reports, the company had a very specific reason for doing this segment.

Dave Meltzer broke down this booking decision on Wrestling Observer Radio (H/t WrestleTalk). He noted how the popularity of Sami Zayn has been the talking point among fans recently and WWE doesn’t want the Mania main event to look secondary in comparison:

‘This was done because they were well aware of how hot the Sami Zayn thing is and it was imperative to not have this WrestleMania main event angle feel secondary. So they knew going in that they had to do something. And they did.’

WWE doesn’t want competition

While many people see it as a WrestleMania main event, Sami Zayn is going to challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed titles at Elimination Chamber from Montreal Canada. Per Meltzer, WWE is trying to make sure there is no competition between the two angles:

‘It’s very important to the entire company that the Cody match is not the secondary match. But it’s also important that people don’t look at it as a competition between the two of them (Rhodes and Zayn), and then the people get behind Sami Zayn, and then that screws up Cody as a babyface.’
