Drew McIntyre could be leaving WWE soon.

It was reported recently that the former world champion’s contract with the company is ending this year. The company has not been able to come to terms with the Scottish Warrior for a new deal.

There has also been an unofficial hiring freeze in WWE. After their deal with Endeavor, the company has passed on signing a number of notable free agents including Jay White. These circumstances have led many to believe that the company will have trouble re-signing McIntyre.

What’s next for Drew McIntyre?

Dave Meltzer talked about Drew McIntyre’s future in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter. He first noted how the company badly needs a main event level of heel:

“It’s also very clear the company badly needs a main event heel, and now is the wrong time to turn Rhodes or Rollins, meaning it makes all the sense in the world to turn McIntyre.”

While turning McIntyre heel maybe an immediate solution, it may not work in the long term. Per Meltzer, Drew is currently working with the assumption that he will be leaving the company after his current deal expires:

“But more, they need to elevate Reed, Priest, Balor or Mysterio to that top heel level. Because McIntyre right now is working with the idea there’s a good chance he’s finishing up, he could do a big program for the title as a challenger and finally leave.”
