The Struggle of Early 2022

In the early part of 2022, Rollins found himself in a challenging position. Despite his status, he felt overlooked and creatively stifled. This period, leading up to his feud with Cody Rhodes post-WrestleMania 38, was a time of great frustration for the superstar.

During a recent appearance on Jimmy Traina’s SI Podcast, Rollins opened up about this challenging period. He described it as the time he was “most angry” with the company’s creative direction.

He stated, “Now over the last decade or so, I’ve been pretty upset in different instances. I would say the beginning of 2022 was the most angry I’ve ever been.”

The Frustration of the WWE Creative Process

Rollins did not delve into the specifics of his grievances but hinted at several instances where he felt the creative process was “b*stardised.”

This dissatisfaction with the creative process left him feeling frustrated and discontented.

He said, “There’s like two-to-three different instances that I’m not gonna get into specifically. [There were] some bastardized versions of what could be good. It leaves you very frustrated with the process and so, I was very frustrated with the process.”

The Turnaround: Feud with Cody Rhodes

The turning point for Rollins came with the arrival of Cody Rhodes and the ensuing storyline leading up to WrestleMania.

This narrative, along with the match itself, provided a much-needed creative outlet for Rollins. He reflected, “Cody Rhodes coming over, us having the story heading into WrestleMania, having the match. So the last month, like March, I was solid, pretty good but everything leading up to that was a very difficult time for me creatively speaking.”
