Strange Chris Benoit reference made on WWE SmackDown this week

There was an incredibly odd and unneeded reference to Chris Benoit during this week’s episode of WWE SmackDown on FOX.

WWE has gone out of its way to avoid references to the former WCW and WWE star ever since the horrific incidents of June 2007.

Understandably, there is really no need for the company to have any reference to the former World Champion, but there was one on this week’s episode of the blue brand bizarrely.

WWE SmackDown commentator Pat McAfee referred to Butch, formerly Pete Dunne, as a “Rabid Wolverine” during the episode.

Of course “Rabid Wolverine” was the nickname of Benoit during his time with WWE. And it’s not like it isn’t something you wouldn’t INSTANTLY associate with the former star.

It’s very unlikely that McAfee would’ve just come up with that on his own, but why would the person in his ear (possibly Vince McMahon) get him to say that?

Hopefully, this isn’t something that WWE will look to continue going forward, as it is not a good look and a pointless addition to Butch’s presentation.
