Recently, she revealed her real-life battle with depression and anxiety, shedding light on a topic often shrouded in stigma.

Perez’s revelation came after her successful defence of the NXT Women’s Championship against Meiko Satomura at NXT Roadblock.

Following the match, Perez collapsed, leading to a flurry of concern among fans and officials. The cause of her collapse was later revealed to be her ongoing struggle with depression and anxiety.

The Story Behind the WWE NXT Storyline

While many assumed this was a part of the NXT storyline, Perez confirmed in an interview with Adam Silverstein on Getting Over that her struggle was not just for the cameras.

“A lot of people don’t know, that was real, it wasn’t just a storyline. I do deal with anxiety. I’ve dealt with depression, and continue to, it’s something you try to work around and try to live with and find resources to help you deal with those things,” she said.

Breaking the Stigma

Perez’s decision to bring her mental health struggles to light was not just about her. It was about breaking the stigma around mental health, especially in a field like professional wrestling.

“There is still a stigma around it, and I wanted to kind of break that stigma,” she said. Her goal was to normalize the conversation around mental health, to let people know that it’s okay to say, ‘I’m a WWE Superstar and I deal with anxiety.’

Perez’s openness about her struggles serves as a beacon of hope for many, especially young fans who look up to her.

She believes that if her story can help anyone, whether they’re kids or adults, then she’s glad to be the person to do that. “My main goal…I knew it was something I needed to watch on TV when I was a kid. I definitely knew that would have helped me,” she added.
