WWE SmackDown: Legend set to RETIRE this week?

Last updated

The wrestling world is abuzz with speculation as WWE SmackDown returns to Toronto on August 18th, 2023.

The reason? Rumours are swirling that this could be the last time fans see the legendary Edge in the ring.

A year ago, after a WWE Raw event in Toronto, Edge hinted at a potential retirement. He shared with fans that his next visit to his hometown might be their chance to bid each other farewell.

Fast forward to now, and that anticipated night has arrived. The Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada, is set to host WWE SmackDown on August 18th, 2023.

Edge vs. Sheamus: A Fitting End?

The upcoming episode promises an electrifying match as Edge is slated to face Sheamus. This isn’t just any match, though. There’s a backstory that makes it even more poignant.

During a recent SmackDown episode, Edge recounted how filming a Celtic Warrior Workouts video with Sheamus was the catalyst that made him believe he could make a comeback to wrestling.

So, if rumours are to be believed, facing Sheamus in what might be his retirement match seems like a poetic way to bring his illustrious career full circle.

WWE SmackDown: Speculations and Confirmations

Dave Meltzer weighed in on the retirement rumours on Wrestling Observer Radio. He recalled how Edge had previously mentioned his intention to retire at a summer show in Toronto in 2023.

Adding more fuel to the fire, Ron Hutchinson, Edge’s trainer for three decades, hinted that this upcoming match might indeed be Edge’s swan song: “Ron Hutchinson, who is Edge’s trainer and has known Edge for 30 years? He basically said that this is Edge’s last match. They certainly did not build it like that. But that was interesting when he said ‘It’s probably, it’s most likely Edge’s last match.'”

While the WWE hasn’t officially billed the match as Edge’s retirement bout, the signs are hard to ignore. Meltzer pointed out that Edge had hoped for a SummerSlam event in Toronto as his retirement stage.

Although that didn’t materialise, the current SmackDown event is the last one in Toronto for the foreseeable future. This has led many to believe that Edge might hang up his boots for good after this match.

A Legacy Like No Other

If this truly is the end for Edge, it marks the culmination of an incredible journey. From his early days in the wrestling circuit to becoming one of WWE’s most celebrated superstars, Edge’s career has been nothing short of spectacular.

His potential retirement in Toronto, his hometown, would be a fitting tribute to a wrestler who has given so much to the sport and its fans.
