WWE Intercontinental Champion Big E will be defending his title for the first time next week on WWE SmackDown. Big E won the title last week on the Christmas Day edition of SmackDown of FOX; defeating Sami Zayn in a Lumberjack match.

Big E will be defending the Championship against Apollo Crews on the January 8th episode of SmackDown. Crews and Big E teamed on this week’s episode of SmackDown to face King Corbin and Sami Zayn. Originally the match was scheduled to be a non-title bout between Big E and Corbin, however Zayn would interfere along with Corbin’s Knights of the Lone Wolf (Wesley Blake & Steve Cutler). This would cause Crews to come out and make the save, starting a tag team match.

Following the match backstage, Big E stated that he was issuing an open challenge for the IC title on next week’s show. Apollo Crews said that he can “consider the challenge accepted” and the match was made official by WWE.

This is Big E’s second run with the Intercontinental Championship. The powerhouse Superstar won the belt for the first time back in November 2013, defeating Curtis Axel on RAW. Big E’s title reign lasted 167 days before losing to Bad News Barrett at Extreme Rules 2014.
