When All Elite Wrestling (AEW) was announced in January of 2019, fans were cautiously optimistic about the new promotion. Would it be able to compete with WWE? Could it finally provide an alternative to the biggest company going? The answer, so far, has been a resounding yes, with some fantastic AEW Championship holders so far.

In addition to its popular weekly television show on TNT, AEW has put on some spectacular live events, including Double or Nothing in May and Full Gear in November. One of the most important aspects of AEW has been its championship belt.

This article will take a look at the history of the AEW Championship from its inception to the present day.

The AEW Championship was created when the company was founded in 2019. The inaugural champion was crowned at ALL OUT in August of that year when Chris Jericho defeated Hangman Adam Page in the main event.

Jericho would drop the title in February 2020, losing to Jon Moxley at the AEW Revolution PPV event. Chris Jericho held the All Elite Wrestling Championship for 182 days before losing to his fellow former WWE Superstar Moxley.

Jon Moxley held the Championship from February 29, 2020 to December 2, 2020; eventually dropping the belt to former IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega. Moxley had a 277 day run as the AEW Champion; with some memorable defences against the likes of Eddie Kingston, MJF and Mr Brodie Lee.

Kenny Omega held onto the AEW Championship for nearly an entire year, from December 2, 2020 to November 13, 2021, eventually losing to Hangman Adam Page at the AEW Full Gear 2021 PPV event.

As of writing, Hangman Page is the current AEW Champion, having held the title for over 80 days after winning it at AEW Full Gear.
