One of the premiere bouts to take place at Wrestle Kingdom night 1 saw New Japan ‘Ace’ Hiroshi Tanahashi take on the Great-o-Khan. The member of Ospreay’s ‘Empire’ O-Khan was looking to take out a New Japan legend in Tanahashi.
NJPW1972.com would hype the match as follows. “For Tanahashi, a man many fans have come to know as ’˜Mr. Tokyo Dome’, a crossroads. The veteran of ten January 4 main events and the leader of a generation that saw NJPW hit a new golden age of prosperity, the Ace is now seeing years of physical sacrifice catch up to him. Can Tanahashi summon his special Wrestle Kingdom will to see off O-Khan? Or will the Dominator attack for the new generation whether Tanahashi is willing to bow out or not?”
Result – Hiroshi Tanahashi took the win after he hit two High Fly Flows to pin O-Khan
