The Notorious One Conor McGregor has reacted to the now ‘official’ retirement of UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Khabib said after his win against Justin Gaethje that he was going to retire from fighting in the cage. The Russian great stated that his mother wished for him to retire, and he was going to honour those wishes due to his father/head coach passing away from COVID-19 complications.
UFC President Dana White confirmed yesterday that Khabib had now retired, despite the President attempting to tease him back for a potential chance to go 30-0.
Dana White on Khabib Nurmagomedov Retirement
“29-0 it is. He is 100% officially retired” Dana White wrote. “It was incredible to watch you work @TeamKhabib, thank you for EVERYTHING and enjoy whatever is next my friend.”
Khabib’s nemesis Conor McGregor also reacted to the news. “Happy retirement kid, smell ya later” Conor McGregor wrote on Instagram. “Never forget who came in the game and made ye. Straight from my big Irish balls. Remember folks, if you hate cutting weight so much, all you have to do is move up a division. God bless.”
It’s worth bearing in mind that Nurmagomedov is only 32 years old. Whilst he is honouring his mother’s wishes, there’s still a lot of time for the fighter to change his mind and make a return. Perhaps McGregor holding afloat ‘his’ Lightweight title may entice him back?
