Former NXT champion has her ‘foot out of the door’ from WWE

It appears that WWE is going to lose another former NXT champion very soon.

It was previously reported that former NXT women’s champion Io Shirai has her contract expiring at the end of August. She hasn’t signed a new deal with the company yet and she will become a free agent next month if things do not change.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer added to these speculations about Shirai. He claimed that ‘Io Shirai’s pretty much got her foot out of the door. Pretty much gone.’

If Shirai does not re-sign with the company, it’ll be the end of her 5 years long run with WWE. She made her first official appearance for WWE on June 30, 2018. Shirai made her in-ring debut as part of the 2018 Mae Young Classic. She made it to the finals of the tournament where she was defeated by Toni Storm.

Io Shirai then moved to NXT and had a successful run there. Her time in the brand included runs with the NXT women’s championship and NXT women’s tag team championships. She has not wrestled since the NXT Stand & Deliver event in April due to an injury. It could end up being her last match with WWE if she does not sign a new contract.
