Former AEW EVP Cody Rhodes made his return to WWE at WrestleMania 38, but reportedly some backstage in All Elite thought it was a work.

Writing in this week’s issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer revealed that a number of “longtime friends” in the company were shocked.

Meltzer noted: “There was a lot of speculation and we spoke to a number of key players in AEW with different thoughts of what happened and why it happened, but the people who knew, Cody and Tony Khan, made an agreement with each other not to talk about the actual reasons.

“We knew Rhodes was frustrated at certain things that were reported, but also said he understood due to the nature of what happened with no explanation that speculation would go crazy and that was part of it.

“Still, there were things said that hurt him as people kept trying to answer the still not fully answered question. One of Rhodes’ longtime friends in AEW, who like most, stayed away from any business discussions with him since he left, said things didn’t add up and was still thinking maybe it was an angle” Meltzer concluded.

Cody Rhodes to WWE

Rhodes returning to WWE is easily one of the biggest stories of the year. Having a top All Elite Wrestling star return to WWE is something we never expected to see, especially Cody Rhodes.

It wouldn’t be a shock to see even more AEW stars make the jump following Cody. One of the most likely is MJF.
